Frozen Saskatoon Berries Now Available in Petoskey

Oleson’s Food Store, 2000 US-31, Petoskey, MI 49770, is now selling frozen saskatoons. If you are in the Little Traverse Bay area you have a unique opportunity. At this time we know of no other store in the Midwest that has these delightful treats, because the available 2016 crop was so quickly consumed.

Saskatoons (Amelanchier alnifolia) are a pom fruit. They look a bit like blueberries, but they are not related, and are quite unique.

Frozen fruit is great as a quick, healthy, cooling (yes, still frozen) snack, and can be used for the full variety to baked goods and sauce recipes.

Saskatoons are nutritious, loaded with antioxidants, and have a unique, tangy, almondy flavor. Several authorities list them among the superfruits.  They are great in pies, scones, muffins, tarts and pancakes, as well as other baked goods. And they work very well in a variety of prepared sauces including ice cream topping, barbecue sauce and vinaigrette. Some companies use them to infuse vodka and wine, and make saskatoon cider.

As we say on the farm, enjoy this healthy and flavorful fruit, and “Stay Tooned!”
